For the pleasant environment by interior illumination, light design should focus on luminance, distribution of luminance and discomfort glare taking into account qualitative aspects of interior luminaries rather than quantitative aspects. In this regard, these days many indexes are widely used to evaluate and regulate discomfort glare of interior luminaries. Some studies have recently been published arguing that there are differences in sensitivity, pigmentation and activities based on the color difference of the iris of the Westerners and Asians. These studies demonstrate that the discomfort glare evaluation indexes developed for the Westerners are not suitable for the Asians. Therefore, considering optic characteristics of the Asians, the existing indexes need to be modified or new indexes need to be developed.
To develop the method to evaluate discomfort glare of interior artificial light sources, this study was conducted as the following procedure.
1) The existing formulas to evaluate discomfort glare and previous studies were analysed to determine experiment variations, scope of variations, evaluation targets and evaluation items for experiments to evaluate discomfort glare. Mock-up that can control experiment conditions was set up and the experiment was conducted.
2) Based on the result of the experiment, the change of discomfort glare according to the change of lightsource area, louver type, luminance of light sources and the position of subjects was examined to find out the relations between them.
3) The result was compared with the existing evaluation formulas for discomfort glare (UGR) and a modified formula was developed.
4) Based on that result, a Nomo-graph was developed as a new evaluation method for discomfort glare suitable for the optic characteristics of the Koreans.
Finally, two types of Nomo-graphs were developed for BZ4 and BZ5, the distribution types of luminous intensity that are commonly used for interior luminaries.
